Fanfiction
Welcome to the fanfiction section. For those of you don’t know, fanfiction simply means fiction written based not on your own world or characters, but on someone elses. When someone who loves Harry Potter writes a story about it, or him, or just anything based in that particular universe, that’s fanfiction. Obviously it can never be sold. It is even technically illegal, a form of copyright infringement, but by and large it is an accepted practice sanctioned even by the original authors, if only by silence (FF has a list of authors who have requested that there not be anything featuring their works, and this list will be observed and respected here). It is purely a labor of love, undertaken by those fans who simply can’t stop when the book/movie/anime does. I do not intend to spend very much longer in this field, for several reasons. One: it is cheating. No matter how good you are at integrating character traits, expanding world concepts and creating true to style plots, the fact remains that all of your accomplishments are built on someone elses. Sometimes standing on the shoulders of giants is just a way to hide how short you are. And if you aren’t really short, then why are you pretending you are? The second reason is simply because I am no longer satisfied with what can be gained from it. When I began, I thought that I didn’t need to make my career in writing: I could be satisfied with being able to write, and having readers to recognize and acknowledge what I did, which is indeed possible thanks to sites like Fanfiction.com. But the fact is that when I’d made this decision, I hadn’t written for quite a while – I’d put it aside to better learn the art of graphic design. Once I began, I was reminded of what writing really meant to me. So now, even as I write Fate Spiral Time, I am also beginning the work of building my own fantasy universe, which will eventually be posted in the Fiction section. I have no intention, I hasten to reassure, of abandoning Fate Spiral Time. For one thing, it’s a bad habit. For another, it would be my first time successfully finishing a novel length work, so it’s a valuable experience regardless. But most of all, I will not abandon it because I don’t want to. I want to see it finished, want to write those last scenes, want to finish Einzbern and conclude Arturia’s fate once and for all. Just like you do.
However, that does not mean that this section is doomed to eventual stasis. I have wondered since I began to write in it what would come of trying to create a fanfiction site that collected only quality writing. There’ s a fair amount of it out there but it’s all buried amidst the debris of a thousand other, far less talented fan wannabe’s, most of which couldn’t get an D from an elementary school teacher for grammar use alone. In an ideal world, I would have liked to start a sort of fanfiction ezine, requiring all works to be submitted and reviewed. But it is not an ideal world, and I can’t dedicate the amount of time such a project could potentially require. What I can do, however, is request permission from those quality authors on FF that I know to post their works here, and to continue to find and invite others. It will be a slow process, but additions should steadily trickle in. So I hope that not only will this section continue to grow, but that it may eventually become a mecca and oasis for those who love the principle of fanfiction, but not most of what it has to offer.
And now, without further ado, the selection.
